Bio-Bak: The Craziest Site You'll See All Week

bio_bak.jpg

I just spent 5 minutes playing with a magnifying glass up a weasels butt. Bio-Bak.nl is not only a wild ride into one persons crazy sense of humour but it's a really good example of exploration and so well crafted in both animation and code. It remind me of the crazy sites Wefail do. It's another example of the most exciting work being done online is not through advertising.

Status Anxiety

I found this documentary from 2004 called Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton on a CD while sorting the crud on my desk. I found it fascinating and and thought provoking at the same time. Also sad in a way. I can't help but think of the iPhone when I watch this.

Watch it all on Youtube here.

There might be better quality versions flying around your office or pick it up on DVD for cheap. This is just part of the 2hr doco.

cover_status.jpg

You can also buy the book on Amazon but why read when it can be spoken to you by the author himself.

Casual, Flash and Indie Games so hot right now

pacman.jpg

2008 has to be the year of the casual game. The market is growing but more importantly there has been a huge amount of buzz around the industry. There are many factors involved in this but it has lead to a resurgence of original game design.

While Microsoft has been allowing ordinary people to make their own games for the XBOXliveArcade (XBLA) platform for a while and recently made it easier with XNA Creators Studio they didn't have the buzz that surrounded the iPhone App store games.

Nintendo's WiiWare platform is only now seeing some great games be released with World of Goo released this week. The PSN hasn't had as many hi profile casual titles. I guess you can't get a look in at Sony until they release Little Big Planet.

Also the Wii itself has shown that it's not just older women who like to play casual games.

Never has there been so many options for a game developer or even brands to get their ideas out to a usually hard to reach audience. And most importantly many of these options have a viable ROI meaning the cost for development is minimal or you might even generate income. And in some cases a lot of income.

We're also seeing games originally developed in flash and some just for fun being ported to the major platforms. N+ made a huge splash on the DS and PSP recently and DeBlob was released as a full fledged Wii game after originally being released as a free PC game that was developed by students.

Wrigleys recently sold their advergaming site Candystand to Funtank. After running it for 11 years and getitng up to 10M visitors a month! Article here.

Recently many of the major players in this market have launched "labs" or "resource centres" in an effort to educate and grab an audience eager to get involved.

Kongregate launched their labs with a sponsorship from Scion. Kongregate is my favirotie of all the gaming portals. They are the definition of what all gaming sites should be. PR info here.

Mochiads launched their resource centre days ago. Mochiads is #1 for flash game advertising.

Iminlikewithyou is another games site to keep an eye on. They recently launched their developer section too with source code and hosting for multi-player games.

I'm looking forward to the 2009 IGF in San Fran next year which showcases the best in indie games and look forward to 2009 being an even bigger year for indie and casual games.

Will brands be left behind as indie games slowly grow and erode TV viewing even more? Which brands will jump onto this early and reap the rewards.

Those wanting a piece of the flash casual game market can already advertise in them through Google In-Game advertising which launched only last week.

B&T Magazine Redesign

BTOCT24_COVER (2).JPG

I'm shocked that one of the weekly advertising mags here in Australia B&T has redesigned and refocused. It's not fortnightly and it's new format is much better. It's actually got articles worth reading not just rehashed PR. The covers are actually creative and the layout and photography of features is spot on. I did feel B&T was slipping (as it became lighter each week) but this feels much more of a worthy read now.

Keep up the good work. The website didn't receive as much of an overhaul but maybe that's in the works?

Fary Cry 2 Experience.

The Far Cry 2 Experience site has more in game footage than you can poke a stick at. The game looks pretty solid too.

Im not a fan of the 12 hr delay on the multiplayer Jackal Hunt game though.

Here's my Far Cry 2 profile below. I had to enter my email address to get this which is a bit cheeky.

Great to see that you can introduce an old fav with a fresh twist.

Political Hot Air Balloon Race

Tequila Sydney obviously need more work as they have had time to put together a Political Hot Air Balloon race :) Good to see agencies being proactive and having some fun on their own backs and not waiting for clients.

Here's Tequila's words on the project;

"Taking live feeds from Google news quotes service, the balloons rise and fall graphically showing who's generating the most virtual column inches each day. You also get the chance to stick a pin in the balloon of a candidate acting as a sort of opinion poll."

I would have liked to have seen it an actual race over the days. Not just rise and fall based on the most recent mentions in the news. They missed a big opportunity with some sexy data visualisation but they definitely got in at the right time for a "presidential viral" piece. I like the Google News mentions metric but it's hard to know if the news is positive or negative (which would be impossible to tell).

They were also responsible for the Slap the Candidate viral a few years back.

Another take on this is Avenue Fighter which takes Twitter mentions of either candidate checks whether they are positive or negative and then uses that to form an attack to either fighter.

avenue_fighter.jpg

Which viral will reign supreme? Both subscribe the to the "viral = ugly" doctrine of design but they are funny enough not to need much polish.

Obama and the tubes

Update - Obama has actually been named AdAge's Marketer of the Year.

One of the most interesting things in following the US Election is the distinct advantage Barack Obama has been given by his campaign's understanding of the web and social networking.

At the start of this whole 18 month long schebang, Obama and the Democrats announced they would opt-out of the traditional public financing model of election fundraising. This surprised some, but meant they were free to attract unlimited personal donations via their website and a constant barrage of email requests.

Its working. Today, the Democrats announced yet another record month in donations raised - $150 million. To give you an idea how much this is, in 2000, the two candidates raised in total "just" $350 million. Over the entire campaign.

And if you take a look at the efforts Obama has got going online, its not surprising:

On the front page of Obama's website buttons to allow donations can't be missed. McCain's website has the same, but every single one of the videos on Obama's YouTube channel links to a Google Donate button:

Picture 12.png

Not a difficult thing to implement. But when you see the kind of views Obama's channel has (almost 100 million so far, compared to McCain's with around 22 million) - that is some serious, potentially game-changing interface design. Why wouldn't McCain have the same button on their videos?

On Obama's website, folks can get involved, and campaign on his behalf, with drag and drop code that allows people to fund raise on their own site:

Picture 11.png

This effectively makes Democrat supporters agents of Obama's campaign, spreading it on his behalf. Which is good for them, and good for Obama.

Whilst McCain during his campaign has used banners that have gone for a bit more of a negative approach (not to mention the design):

McCainHillaryBanner-thumb-300x242.jpg

...Obama's banners on the other hand offers some utility - a tax cut widget that allows people to see how much their tax bill would be under the Democrats:

Picture 10.png

Of course, Obama even has his own iPhone app

Picture 13.png

Not to mention the many probama memes all across the web. This is of course not the direct doing of the Obama campaign, but more proof they are connecting with people online:

Sarah Palin still uses Hotmail, Barack Obama is your new Bicycle, When Obama Wins, Palin as President, McCain free whitehouse, The Great Schlep, Things Younger than John McCain, Spelling Change and 30 Reasons to vote for Barack Obama.

McCain, for his side of the equation, has a game of space invaders and McCainSpace, which gave me the exact same feeling I had when my dad did an impromptu "rap" in front of my friends when I was 12. It looks awkward and probably won't draw much of a crowd.

Its no surprise that McCain might have difficulty connecting with younger voters. His appeal is with conservative, traditionally older Americans. And he's admitted on a number of occasions he doesn't use email (due to war injuries I believe). But it just seems that the attempts he does make, are simply not as smart, from a media or engagement point of view. And the more we find out about who uses the web, the more we are surprised at the wide demographic that actually gets involved (retirees, housewives, etc). So there's no excuse for both parties to be all over new media as a way of engaging with people.

Obama has hit a wide range of voters from every angle possible, and allowed people to feel like they're actually involved in the campaign. The Democrats seems to be more acutely aware of how fragmented the voter audience has become over the past few years:

Picture 31.png

Here's a few numbers also:

Barack Obama
YouTube Subscribers - 101,318
Friends – 23,817
MySpace friends – 711,524
Twitter followers – 99, 121

John McCain
YouTube Subscribers – 25, 322
Friends – Not stated
MySpace friends - 172,953
No official Twitter account

Will this all matter come November 4th? Who knows. US Elections involve countless factors and hundreds of much bigger, knife-edge topics that could prove decisive for one candidate one way or the other. We haven't seen so far how big a role the web will play in swaying a campaign one way or the other (remember a short three elections ago where e-mail use was far from widespread). And TV campaigning is an area that still involves big media spends that will end up determining a lot of people's vote. But if Obama does win, his campaign's approach to the web certainly won't have hurt. And will probably come to be a textbook approach to fighting an election online.

Digital Agencies on Twitter

I'd like to start a list of all agencies on Twitter with an "agency" account they post through. I have several now but thought I'd let everyone submit there before I do an article on it.

It doesn't count if your CEO or CD has an account it has to be under the agencies name.

I've also seen a few (well 2) with "fan" pages on Facebook which I thought was interesting. So if you have a "fan" page too let us know.

Who is Johnny X?

Sony Ericsson launch a new web series called "Who is Johnny X?" for their Xperia X1 (name sucks) phone.

Web widget below (which had terrible embed code). The full site here

This blog goes into how it's really just a BMW films sans the big names. Advertainment. With some other examples. I liked Hammer and Coop!

It feels very much like the recent Scarlet promotion for LG (which I cant find a good link for). I guess you must go all serious and action with these brands instead of humour, suspense or any thing else except action.

Death of....

People are still talking about the death of something. The 30 second spot, newspapers, magazines. But shit even comics are still going strong and how much competition do they face in today's digital world?

Here's a couple of big comic things happening.

The recent spate of GREAT comic book movie adaptations has probably lead to more investment in new IP being developed. And the recent success of Marvel's Civil War showed that comics can do big cross over blockbusters and excite everyone.

Oh and hats off to Marvel for Marvel Zombies! Who doesn't like zombies?! All DC can muster is a Mortal Kombat tie in. Yawn

ASX Digital Media Watch 5

NoMoney_fs.jpg

Has it been 3 months since we last checked in on listed digital stocks? I think it has.

Let's take a look at where the Australian stocks were in July 5th, 2008.

SGN: STW COMMUNICATIONS: $1.47
HYO: Hyro: $0.046
BLU: Blue Freeway: $0.069
CQU: Commquest: $0.175
QXQ: Q Limited: $0.015
MCU: Mitchell Communication Group: $0.55

Let's see where everyone is now. While recession talks are escalating digital is seen as the one area which wont be hit as hard. But the stink of recession has eroded confidence in everyone.

As of October 17, 2008

SGN: STW COMMUNICATIONS: $0.89 ($0.58)
HYO: Hyro: $0.022 ($0.024)
BLU: Blue Freeway: $0.060 ($0.009)
CQU: Commquest: $0.090 ($0.085)
QXQ: Q Limited: $0.009 ($0.006)
MCU: Mitchell Communication Group: $0.425 ($0.125)

Ouch another tough few months and it wont get better quickly. I'm no expert but when your share price isn't even 1c you have to wonder how it can be valued?

What I do find funny as that prices slump while charts like the one below are shown to try and boost investors confidence. These type of graphs are pure fluff. What this doesn't show if that the money isn't going to them. It's going elsewhere.

adspend_up.jpg

If companies get as creative with actual client briefs as they do with their accounts and investor relations then they might see a turn around. However I know when I have someone else money I treat it differently too.

Full Disclosure: I am not a registered anything to do with the financial system. I also run an independent digital agency and It's in my morbid interest to follow and kick these listed entities. I also previously worked at Hyro and was stiffed a large sum of money when they initially went into receivership back in 2000/2001. I also personally dislike the name Commquest purly on the fact it sounds lame.

"I don't punch I glass" T-Shirts

glassing_news.jpg

This top story on News.com.au shows how bad SEO for some places are and how lazy web journalism of the mainstream media is. I can't for the life of me find where this T-shirt is being sold?

Also I feel like it's the newspapers job to properly link their articles. Why mention the shirt but not provide me with a link to check it out and maybe complain if I was so inclined? It's just old school web journalism. Blogs have taken over as a good place to get news as they link their articles (maybe too much sometimes).

The article doesn't even cross link with other more high profile gassings like Wayne Carey. I'm lead down an article one way street. No related article links, nothing. Then a filtered comment section which provides a very slow dialogue.

Pretty much anything news worthy these days would have a related story or something worth linking up. Wikipedia links are the best example. Provide a way for your readers to get more info. It's not like they wont come back. That is unless they find a better site.

I'd like to see the news sites put more effort into their actual content and less into their sales strategies and ad serving technologies.

While I'm at it telling people what they can do better I can always spend more time proofing my posts for errors or grammar.

The Great Schlep

This is funny, smart work.

Sarah Silverman and Droga5 have joined forces to convince young Jews to pitch the merits of Obama in '08 to their less-enthused Floridian grandparents.

With America's election history, and how tightly the decision has come down in a few "battleground" states, this could have big impact.

bb2.gif

And it looks like it might be doing so already.

Sarah does a great sell. And Droga5's thinking is visible enough to be clever, but not make it immediately apparent that this is an ad agency created microsite.

Also check out Aliens Vote from Cuban Council (the guys behind K10K, remember them?).

They're documenting who non-eligible voters within the US would vote for.

Quit In Style for Young Guns

quit_in_style.jpg

Young Guns have added a new category this year entitled "The Craft of Quitting" and put together a site to house the submissions. It's best explained with their press release.

"The site calls on employees with a grudge to bear to dream up inventive ways to quit. Ideas already posted on the site include cultivating maggots in your boss’ desk drawer; corroding their collection of industry trophies; spray painting gold ‘up yours’ symbols on their office door – a fresh interpretation of the ‘golden handshake’ – or freezing the secretary’s goldfish bowl."

You'd want to make sure you don't actually follow through with most of these as the industry is quite small and it's going to be tough times soon for some.

Here's a few that have been seeded by Young Guns. Surprisingly all Vimeo instead of Youtube?

Deep Fried from Sam on Vimeo.

The Finger from Gomez on Vimeo.

What sh*t from poobandit on Vimeo.

Lock Down 2 from mister.richie1 on Vimeo.

There's also a bunch of text only and image submissions on the site. The campaign is by Droga5 Sydney. I think Matty from there has been working on the Young Guns stuff for a while now.

Subprime, CDO, Recession = Who Cares

There's never been a better way to find out what people are thinking about than Google Trends. It's like a global vox pop at your finger tips.

Check the rising searches for recession, subprime and CDO. All related to the financial mess we are in. Dire straights? Looks like Singapore is screwed too judging by the number of searches.

recession_search.jpg

But then compare this to searches for costumes...... um look like it's business as usual for most people. "We might lose the house but fuck it.. we're not going to let that ruin Halloween!"

recession_vs_costumes.jpg

Technorati also allows you to easily chart posts on certain keywords too. Recession and subprime posts have all increased.

recession.jpg

subprime.jpg

All this search traffic and confusion about financial elements that make no sense creates a real opportunity for people who know WTF is going on to step in an explain it in layman's terms.

A forward thinking financial institution can use this time to try and explain it to consumers rather than push their standard messaging. And in doing so create some trust and worth behind their brand besides having the lowest interest rate. There might already be examples of this I've missed?

There's already been a few PPT files flying about explaining some aspects in a humorous way. Like the Subprime Primer which you can read in full on Google Docs

subprime_primer.jpg

Or if you need this explained by the Aussie comedy duo (usually seen at the end of 60 minutes here in Aus) watch here.

r232767_931730.jpg

Or if you want to be even more confused about the future economic situation (hint: it's not good) check this presentation from Sequoia Capital (the guys who backed Google). Thanks Valleywag for the tip.

And lastly this type of situation is best explained through video like the one below. This was found on an NPO's channel.

Xplane, a company which specialises in this type of communication (and one of my fav companies around) has their Xplanation video online too. They sent this around to their mailing list. Although I found the champagne video easier to follow as to why it all went tits up.

Watching all these presentations has cleared up a lot for me. I'm still confused why the USD is going so strong lately but I'll wait for a video to explain it to me easily than read pages of boring jargon.

How does this financial situation affect the digital market worldwide and especially here in Australia? I'm hoping it means more money goes into online and less in traditional (seems obvious).

It also means the listed digital agencies will have a hard time raising more capital. BlueFreeway's recent "3 for 1 renounceable rights issue" will be a hard sell when everyone is trying to keep hold of their cash. And even harder sell when you look at the stocks recent performance. For those interested you can read the prospectus here.

Note: Bannerblog are not financial advisors nor do we have any idea how the financial system works. See a registered financial advisor for proper advice before throwing your money away.

Youtube for Non Profits

youtube_non_profit.jpg

It's restricted to US and UK non profit organizations but Youthbe now has a non profit channel option. "So what" you ask? Well a lot as it actually has Google Checkout built in which allows donations to be directly sent via Youtube.

The check out the Youtube Non Profit page for more info. Let's hope they roll this out to Australia. This is a great move on Google's behalf as it could generate another revenue stream for non profits. It's early days, Mashable reported on it just a few weeks ago so we'll see if people are willing to part with cash while on Youtube. I can see non profits integrating the call for donations into their videos and even holding users to ransom for more funding until the next video is released (well maybe not but you get the idea).

Youtube also introduced Theatre view. For full length videos. It's a welcome feature as this "lights out" feature has been on other sites for a while. You can restrict YouTube's search results to feature length videos by appending &longform=1:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=site:youtube.com&longform=1

Cheers to Google System Blog for the tip.

Untapped Gold: Tilt Shift Videos

Attention Ad people: Think of a brand that would fit these type of photo videos, throw in a logo at the end with some line about making problems small or we have everything in perspective (i'm not a write as you can see) and you're golden. Oh and pick a brand that's in an industry that's usually dry like the finance industry.

Beached from Keith Loutit on Vimeo.

Bathtub II from Keith Loutit on Vimeo.

This Tilt Shift effect has been done a fair but with stills but this is really the first time it's been done in video. It's an effect that once it's used once it loses it's appeal. And there isn't much else that hasn't already been done. We all know that super slow mo has been done to death.

So has light drawing.

Stop motion too.

Anything else I've missed?

Social Networks Aids Crime

Attention CSI writers. Real life is stranger than fiction and the two following examples involving Criagslist prove this.

From Cnet just last week. Man robs Armoured truck and uses decoys dressed as himself recruited via Criagslist to be around the scene as he escapes. He escapes via an inner tube down the river! They may have been filming a new season of Prison Break :) Another link here with a video.

I love this story! Can you imagine pulling this off but not being able to tell anyone!

And this one from March 2008 where an ad announced the contents of a house were "free for all" as the owner had to leave suddenly. The owner returns early to find 30 people taking stuff from his house!

I love this too. It's like the ultimate prank and cost's nothing.

I remember when for Mission Impossible 3 they were running their Easter Egg hunt / ARG (info here) and one code was hidden on Craigslist. I posted an entry to my blog at the most obvious spot (but the wrong answer) and got heaps a traffic. It got taken down 2 days later. Not exactly at the same level of these guys but an example of how you can easily hijack a promotion running on social networks.

Are there other examples of this in which a social network has been used in a nefarious way? I was going to try and claim the term Crime 2.0 but it's already been used. Here's one blog which sums up what I'm thinking.

"I'm just waiting for reports of shrewd criminals that monitor Twitter, Jaiku or Facebook to see reports like "I'm going out of town for the weekend. Ciao" and use the information to break into some poor geek's house. It wouldn't take a genious, that's for sure."

So keep that in mind when you next tweet that the people following you might be doing so for the wrong reasons.

Viral Blogs: Viral Friday

An RSS feed I always take notice of is the Viral Blog's Viral Friday. Which this week had this gem (Take on Me the Literal Version) as their #1. We can't stop laughing. I can see more in this series being rolled out soon.

The creator has his own Youtube channel as site Dust FIlms. This is how the new bread of directors are getitng their start. With the funding for music film clips going as low as $2,000 for semi-mainstream artists (according to the talk I heard last year from TDB) it's these guys who offer something that the bigger directors cant. Slave wages with unlimited enthusiasm.

Doritos Banner Take Over Plugin

Nice idea even if it has been done before with other apps and doesn't really suit the product.

This is actually student work from Carl Fredrik Jannerfeldt and Tomas Jonsson who will be courting emails form potential employers very soon.

The Dark Art of Ranking Blogs

Top_10-708117.jpg

People are inherently competitive. Whether it be in their career, sport or a friendly game of Pictionary on a Saturday afternoon people like to win or at least beat other people. The same can be said for bloggers which is a subset of the population who want to get their voice heard and thus want attention. The recent spate of blog rankings has got the whole community excited about being in the top XXX of something.

However when you start to rank people by their blogs you run into a few problems. How do you rank something as complex as a blog? What metrics do you use, when the majority of real data is hidden to the outside user? It's easy to compare sports stars as you rank them based on their performance on the field. If you started adding in income generated, fans and other vague data it'd become a lot more complicated just like it is with blogs. Many assumptions need to be made.

There are a few global and localised blog ranking systems around with some drilled down to specific industries.

We have the omnipresent Technorati influence. For all blogs of shapes and sizes.
Ad Age's Power 150: Global advertising blogs
Australia's Top 50 Marketing Blogs: Aussie blogs
Blogponds top 100 Blogs: Aussie blogs in general
Scamp's Top Ad blogs: with a UK subset
Top Blogs for Women: Australia again
There's even a top scrapbooking blog list.

There's also special editorials posting the top blogs here and there including Time's Top 25 blogs

Imagine if they ranked the Billboard Top Albums based on more than just sales? It'd become a nightmare and open to tactics used to generate higher rankings.

Right now to rank blogs we have a my rid of metrics such as Technorati inbound links, Technorati inbound blog, Google Page Rank, Bloglines readership, Feedburner readership, Alexa ranking, Yahoo! links.

There's also companies with their "patent pending" technology to rank blogs like Collective Intellect. There's also a wealth of other easy to track buzz on social media.

One thing missing from a lot of these rankings is participation and loyalty of readers. Bannerblog has a very vocal audience who like to share their opinion on banners, and regularly get 15+ comments per post. (not so much in the news) Other blogs find it hard to garner more than 3 comments per post. (like this section) This type of participation I think is an important part of the strength of a blog. I run other blogs (Sleevage, WTFcostumes) that get more traffic but the audience is very transient. Mostly based of search engine traffic. There is a 30%-50% increase in the number of new visitors. Bannerblog sits at a 45% new visitor rate most months. No one really searches for "VW Banner" on Google. But they search for "CD Covers" all the time.

Let's hope Google can come in an create a one blog ranking system to rule them all. They have the Blog Search now which specifically filters results from blogs only. Here's a nice breakdown of Google 's "Patent pending" blog ranking algorithm.

The only Top 100 list I usually agree with is FHM's Top 100 sexiest women.

Adobe CS4 is coming

It's almost here. Flash 10 loaded with all the eyecandy features that you never asked for but now you see are pretty awesome. 3D transform, IK (bones) and a motion editor will make stuff much easier to animate and work with. See full feature list here.

Flash versions always seem to go in cycles.

Flash 6 - 7 was all functionality and no eyecandy.
Flash 7 - 8 was pretty much all eyecandy
Flash 8 - 9 was just for AS3 which is not exactly eyecandy but made flash run fast.

Now the release of Flash CS4 (or flash 10) is here and it's loaded with eyecandy!

make sure to register for the free events happening around Australia too. Click the promo image below for more info and to RSVP.

McCain in '08

Get the economy back on track, get yourself a McCain '08 T-Shirt.

I made these using Spread Shirt, and put together the site using Big Cartel, as a little side experiment in e-commerce. This is after being inspired by all the election hysteria, and the massive social networking success that is McCainSpace.

Big Cartel is definitely worth checking out if you're after a non-lame, CSS customizable shopping cart.

Crystal Head (Skull) Vodka

crystalhead.jpg

Oh look Dan Aykroyd is promoting his new line of Crystal Head Vodka. He must be trying to capitalise on the release of Indy 4 on DVD on Oct 14. Or is it for Ghostbusters 3 a franchise Dan has much more vested interest in.

Dan did have a bit part in Temple of Doom so it's not too much of a stretch to see that he'd be pimping a fake product to promote a movie. What is weird is that Dan actually has his own winery, aptly named Dan Aykroyd Wines and from various reports like on Notcot the Crystal Skull Vodka is actually real. That said it might be PR gifts which would make more sense and would explain why Notcot did such a big post about it. Check out the products website. No where to buy page though which seems like a waste if it was real.

Update: Jean from NOTCOT replied to say no PR gift and you can buy it here. It's sold out though.

Either way it's brought to light that Dan Aykroyd is still alive and kicking (even if Bill Murray is taking the spotlight), there's talks of Ghostbusters 3 brewing and that until now I never realised "Aykroyd" sounds rude.

Oh and if you think Dan is faking it when it comes to the Paranormal check him out talimg about how the "Men in Black" cancelled his show about UFO's. (This is not a SNL sketch)

It's hard to take what ever he says seriously as his usual delivery is so deadpan.

Muppet Virals

These look to be official Muppet videos. Will there be a Muppet film coming soon? They are all over Youtube as well. Each character has just one video with limited cross linking. I look forward to seeing if they continue with this or if it's leading up to some bigger Muppet related announcement. Considering the amount of cash Alvin and the Chipmunks made recently Disney would be stupid not to pump out a new Muppets movie.

Ode To Joy from Beaker on Vimeo.

Habanera from The Swedish Chef on Vimeo.

These videos are not only fun but right on the Muppet brand. It's extending the Mahnahmahnah! song which went mental when I was in highscool. It was on the Triple J Hottest 100 or something.

There are quite a few Muppet Videos done by fans. Plenty of gansta rap videos and movie mashups as seen below.

My fav Muppets were Beaker and the Swedish Chef.

Election 2008

Politics in 2008. It's interesting they need to do a campaign to get people to vote. Here in Australia it's illegal not to.

Sarah Silverman is working her ass off this election.

Even the The Simpsons get in on the act. Note: Sarah Silverman does not feature in this Simpsons clip.

But does Obama have McCain space? I think not.

Banner Concerts

I have no idea why there are 5 bands playing inside a banner space in the aptly named Banner Concerts but it looks like a fun shoot. This is by Boondoggle in Belgium after I found a Flickr set from the shoot.

I initially thought this was a bands album sampler piece (like Arcade Fire's from last year) but there are different bands so I'm assuming its a music related festival/competition thing. Or it could be a way to get bands to submit their songs and the winning bands make up the empty spots on the banner board. Either way it's an interesting execution.

What's missing from Banner Concerts is the ability to embed a chosen band on my site. This is much more fun than embedding a Myspace player. If someone can tell me the exact purpose of the site I'll revise this post.

First, largest, most successful & viral

When writing a press release in the advertising industry its hard not to claim something using the following terms

"First, largest, oldest, most successful & viral"
and sometimes using more than one of these in the same release.

What I want to know is does everyone believe what they read or do they do as I do and call bullshit? If so why isn't there any fact checking being done? I've seen some claim to be the "most successful online campaign for XXXX" and agencies call themselves "largest XXXX XXXX agency" or "the first XXXXX agency in XXXXX".

Blatant use of the word viral is the easiest to put a stop too. If you are writing the press release before the campaign has been launched then describing it as viral is like calling it award winning before it's won any awards. Julian mentions this here and here.

I'll admit I've done it myself with both Bannerblog and Soap. Each time I knew it was bending the truth. But I'e made sure to put and end to it lately. I guess we work in an industry build on deception (read: BS) and there is no honour among thieves.

If you see a blatant exaggeration of the truth from an advertising agency please send it my way and we'll try and make this a regular fixture.
